PINE TREE APPLE CLASSIC FUND PRESENTS CHECK TO CHILDREN'S MINNESOTA FOR $330,000
Pine Tree Apple Classic Fund President Kevin Werwie and its Board of Directors presented doctors and staff at Children’s Minnesota on December 7 with a check for $330,000 supporting targeted children’s cancer research efforts for the largest pediatric cancer and blood disorders program in the upper Midwest. Dr. Emily Chapman, Sr. Vice President of Medical Affairs, and Chief Medical Officer and Jennifer Soderholm, Sr. Vice President and Chief Development Officer and President of Children’s Minnesota Foundation, accepted the gift on behalf of Children’s Minnesota.
Funds were raised as part of the 2022 Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic, which took place August 4-7, 2022, at LifeTime in White Bear Lake, Minn. Celebrating its 37th anniversary this year, the event raised almost $470,000.
“We are so excited to present the largest check to Children’s Minnesota since we formed the Pine Tree Apple Classic Fund non-profit organization, and one of the largest ever over the 37-year history of the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic event,” Werwie said. “We can’t thank our players, sponsors and donors enough for their generosity and steadfast support of this important research. It’s a true testament to the research team and staff at Children’s Minnesota for their amazing commitment and results that motivate us to continue our fight to help children all over the world impacted by cancer.”
The allocation of the $330,000 will be divided equally between the Pine Tree Endowment Fund and the Children’s Minnesota Annual Research Program Operating Fund supporting targeted research needs of DICER1 related tumors and coping with the long-term effects of cancer treatment.
In 2020, Pine Tree Apple Classic Fund announced the establishment of the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Endowed Chair in Cancer and Blood Disorders Research and the appointment of Dr. Kris Ann Schultz as its inaugural chair. Children’s Minnesota has the largest pediatric cancer and blood disorders program in the Upper Midwest, caring for more than 58 percent of children diagnosed with cancer or blood disorders in Minnesota.
“This incredibly generous and forward-thinking support from Pine Tree allows us to continue our research to advance outcomes for kids and adults with DICER1-related cancers worldwide and also supports ongoing supportive care research here at Children's Minnesota,” Schultz said. “This impacts kids from across the Midwest and around the world. Pine Tree truly has local impact and worldwide reach touching the lives of thousands of families impacted by childhood cancer.”
"We are grateful for everyone who makes the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic possible, for their gift and their long-standing support of cancer research at Children's Minnesota," Soderholm said. "This generosity allows Dr. Schultz to pursue new therapies that have the potential to increase survival rates and improve the quality of life for children with cancer."
Since 1986, the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic has raised over $7 million for childhood cancer research efforts at Children’s Minnesota and around the world. The 38th annual tournament is scheduled for August 3-6, 2023, at Life Time in White Bear, Minn. Details about the tournament, and how to get involved in this amazing event, are available at www.ptacf.org.

Mike GreenBaum - 2022 Hall Of FAme Inductee
The Hall of Fame Award honors an individual or family that has made an outstanding and long-term contribution to the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic. Mike Greenbaum has been a steadfast contributor for over 27 years and has always kept us grounded in the importance of our targeted research and positive impact to children and their families all around the world.
Mike’s involvement in Pine Tree started back in 1995, as a volunteer when he worked for Lake Area Bank, one of our early Presenting Sponsors. As a tennis player new to the community, Mike was excited to get involved with this amazing event, and as a bank employee he volunteered in a variety of ways including handling the daily cash collections/banking for the event.
After Mike’s initial exposure to the event, he was hooked and took on greater leadership roles over the years including:
Mike is a great listener with a strong strategic orientation. He kept the group grounded in the importance of our mission, and the need that still exists for this research to continue. He is a great guy that got involved, and is making a difference for an amazing cause. We are so grateful for Mike’s friendship, support and commitment to our organization and the cause.
Finally, Mike is pretty certain that he and Dr. Yoav Messinger are the only two people to have run all of the Pine Tree 5k/10k run events. Now that’s dedication!
Congratulations Mike, and welcome to the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Hall of Fame as our 2022 inductee!

- Co-Chairing the PTATC in 2000, raising over $170,000 that year with fellow Co-Chairs Keith Erickson, Carol Danielson and Bruce Vassar.
- Starting the Junior Pine Tree tournament. Mike is excited to see the Junior tournament back - and flourishing again - this year!
- Serving on the PTATC Advisory Committee/Board for 6 years.
- Participating in several important strategic planning sessions over the years, helping shape the successful growth trajectory of the event and research.
- Helping form our own 501(c)(3) - the Pine Tree Apple Classic Fund.

Clay Sollenberger Wins 2022 Sportsmanship Award
Long-time tournament player and Pine Tree supporter Clay Sollenberger was named the 2022 Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Sportsmanship Award Winner.
Sollenberger first started playing in Pine Tree as a junior player, winning the championship at one point (he still has his trophy for winning) before playing in the Open and now Masters Division of the tournament. He also serves as the play-by-play announcer for Sunday's live-streamed finals and took part in perhaps one of the most memorable moments in Pine Tree history when he shaved his chest at the Friday Night player party to raise money for the cause.
An endless supporter of the event both on and off the court, Sollenberger raised $5,145 for the cause this year.
